The imagery of primates acting like humans is rooted in a centuries-old French artistic tradition known as Singerie (French for "monkey trick").
Following the publication of Charles Darwin's “On the Origin of Species” in 1859, the relationship between humans and primates became a massive topic of discussion at all levels of society.
Artists dressed monkeys in human clothes and depicted them doing human activities to show the absurdity or vanity of human behavior.
Jewellers capitalized on this cultural fascination by incorporating highly detailed monkeys into daily luxury items like watch fobs, stick pins, and charms.
A monkey deeply engrossed in a book gently poked fun at self-important academics, philosophers, or the upper-class obsession with appearing overly intellectual.
